Robert Bentley, the Alabama Governor has resigned yesterday following a shocking sex scandal. The scandal has staggered the state , diminished his popularity and prompted a series of criminal investigations.
“Mr. Bentley quit in connection with a plea agreement on two misdemeanor charges: failing to file a major contribution report and knowingly converting campaign contributions to personal use. He pleaded guilty Monday afternoon”- Said Ellen Brooks, a special prosecutor.
Mr.Bentley repeatedly kept denying his physical relationship with Ms. Mason and said he has not broken any laws. Inspite of his claim he was put into multiple investigations by including reviews by the F.B.I. and the Alabama attorney general’s office.
It is to be noted that the republican has acknowledged in March 2016 that he had made sexually charged remarks to Rebekah Caldwell Mason(his senior political adviser).
“I have decided it is time for me to step down as Alabama’s governor,” – he added.
Mr. Bentley will be replaced by a former treasurer Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey. She will be the second woman to hold the office. Kay Ivey was a high school teacher and bank office before working for Legislature. She graduated from Auburn University.
She said her administration will be open and transparent.
“The Ivey administration will be open, it will be transparent and it will be honest,”- Ms. Ivey said.
