Bert Newton pictured in good spirits as he recovers from pneumonia in hospital

Bert Newton has been pictured smiling in his hospital bed cradling his young grandson, days after he was admitted to the ER following complications from pneumonia.

Patti Newton posted the photo to her Instagram account showing the four-time Gold Logie winner in good spirits as he remains in hospital for observation and testing.

Newton, 78, is on the mend at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond, Melbourne, where he is recovering from a lingering cough arising from the infection he picked up five weeks ago.“Monty always puts a smile on his face. Thanks for all your well wishes xx”, Ms Newton captioned the photo.

The post was met by an outpouring of well wishes for the TV icon.

“Wishing you a speedy recovery Bert. Hope Patti you’re doing ok. Keep smiling Bert. It lights up your face and everyone else around you,” one person commented.

Ms Newton said her husband’s hospital admission was at the advice of doctors but his illness was “not a life and death situation”.

““This is not a life and death situation, but it’s nice everybody is caring about everything,” she told the Herald Sun.

“Although we don’t want to over dramatise everything, he will be fine.

“He is under observation more than anything,” she said.

Newton is expected to be released from hospital tomorrow.
